BREMERHAVEN, Germany, June 5 (UPI) -- A mated pair of male penguins at a German zoo have been given a chick to raise that was rejected by its biological parents.

Joachim Schoene, a veterinarian at the Bremerhaven zoo, said adopted dads Vielpunkt and Z, who spend all their time together and have refused all attempts by zookeepers to mate them with females, immediately accepted an egg that was rejected by its parents, The Scotsman reported Friday.

"Another pair abandoned an egg by pushing it out of their nest, so we placed it in their care. They look after it in a very touching way, just like a heterosexual couple," Schoene said. "They accepted the egg immediately and took turns incubating it with their body heat. They did this for 35 days and the baby was born on 25 April. It is in a little cave in the enclosure, which is fiercely guarded by one or the other at all times."

Schoene said the proud penguin papas chew their baby's food and regurgitate it into the chick's beak.
