The society is calling on the United States and Britain to introduce a more simplified, phonetic system of spelling, The Times of London reported Monday. Advertisement The English language in writing reflects how English was spoken in the 13th to 15th centuries, not how it is spoken today, society officials said, noting there are different spellings for the same sound, silent letters and missing letters in many English words. In a poll of 2,000 adults commissioned last month by the society, more than half in Britain and the United States could not spell "embarrassed" and 60 percent spelled "millennium" wrong. Only 25 percent of the people polled in both countries thought they had a spelling problem, and one-third said they relied heavily on computer spellchecking, the Society said.
