BURNLEY, England, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A 72-year-old English milkman who claimed he provided marijuana for customers who needed it to ease their pain has received a suspended sentence.
Robert Holding of Burnley, who had already pleaded guilty, was given a 36-month prison sentence at a hearing Friday, The Daily Mail reported. Judge Beverly Lunt said Holding was spared jail because he visits his wife, who has Alzheimer's disease, daily.
"You were not some philanthropist helping out the elderly out of the good of your heart. You dealt drugs for profit in a calculated way. It was a business," the judge said.
Holding was arrested after police found marijuana in an egg crate in his van. He admitted he was supplying 17 people who would leave him notes telling him how much they wanted.
His lawyer said his profits from the marijuana business were small and his oldest customer was 92.
