Man accused of taking communion wafers

JENSEN BEACH, Fla., Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Authorities said parishioners at a Jensen Beach, Fla., Catholic church stopped a man allegedly attempting to steal communion wafers.

steal a handful of communion wafers from the priest," TCPalm.com reported Monday.

The report said "the enraged and offended parishioners stood in his way" and Ricci became violent, pushing two of the worshipers to the ground. Deputies said one of the parishioners suffered minor injuries and another was taken to a hospital with chest pains.

The deputies said the group of parishioners held Ricci down until they arrived and took him into custody. He was charged with two counts of simple battery as well as charges of theft and disruption of a religious assembly.

The suspect was being held in the Martin County Jail in lieu of $2,000 bond.
