SAN DIEGO, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- A 100-year-old woman in Carlsbad, Calif., says avoiding stress has allowed her to live a long and happy life.

Beatrice Patten, who celebrated turning a century old on Thursday, told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the key to a long and happy life is simply to avoid stress and just deal with any life problems immediately.

"When people ask me how I've lived so long, I just tell them I don't let things bother me," Patten said.

"I deal with problems immediately, then I don't bother with it anymore. I just go on my merry way. Stress is what kills people."

During her long life, Patten has traveled to foreign locales such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka.

Patten never married but the senior offers no regrets to turning down a prospective suitor in her past.

"I wrote him a Dear John letter that said thanks, but no thanks, which was too bad because oil was discovered on his property," she told the Union-Tribune.
