Vanity plates may finally reach Norway

OSLO, Norway, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Norwegians who want them could soon have the opportunity to get personalized license plates -- sometimes known as vanity plates.

Transport Minister Liv Signe Navarsete, who last year said she would not approve the plates, changed her mind this year because they can be a source of revenue, Aftenposten reported. A year ago, Navarsete expressed what could be a typical Norwegian egalitarian attitude.

"Fancy plates are just vanity," she said in an interview with NTB. "I don't want a system here in Norway where car owners can buy themselves a special plate."

Vanity plates were first introduced in California and spread to elsewhere in the United States and to other countries. In Norway, they could be available next year when motor vehicle officials install a new data system.

The plates are expected to cost about $40. They would be assigned to a car-owner, not to a car, so that owners can transfer them when they buy new cars.
