Giant cabbage burst before weigh-in

PALMER, Alaska, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- An Alaska farmer said his potentially record-setting giant cabbage exploded just four days before the official weigh-in at the Alaska State Fair.

Scott Robb said the explosion occurred three years ago. He found the 6-foot-wide cabbage after its destruction and was instantly disqualified from the giant cabbage weigh-in, the Anchorage Daily News reported Tuesday.

Robb and his wife Mardie said they weighed the remains of the mammoth cabbage and discovered it could have been only the second cabbage in the contest's 60 years to top 100 pounds.

"You should have seen poor Scott's face," Mardie Robb told the Daily News. "We knew it was big but to hit over the 100-pound mark and for it to be literally coleslaw was not fun."

Robb figures the cabbage burst because it had been growing too fast.

Robb said he has two cabbages entered in this year's contest but he doesn't expect either of them to reach to 100-pound mark. Last year he lost by a half-pound -- the difference between a $2,000 prize and a nice ribbon, the Daily News said.

Sheriff: Urinal posters catch suspects

OSCEOLA, Mo., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The county sheriff in Missouri says his policy of hanging "wanted" posters above urinals in the department's building has led to 10 arrests so far.

St. Clair County Sheriff Mearl J. Justus said deputies began hanging the posters and mugshots on a bulletin board over the urinals in the department's men's room a few years ago and peeing deputies have thus far recognized 10 faces and brought suspects to justice, the St. Louis (Mo.) Post-Dispatch reported Tuesday.

The sheriff's office said Deputy Dan Hill was relieving himself last month when he recognized the face of a pastor wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl.

"Hill said, 'I know who that is, I know where he stays,' and they went out and picked him up," said Sgt. John Fulton, the sheriff's administrative assistant.

Fulton said the bulletin board location may be unconventional, but it has obtained results.

"It is kind of a goofy idea, but that's what he (the sheriff) is known for," he said.

Sex charges dropped against Ky. politician

HARLAN, Ky., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- An ex-candidate for governor of Kentucky, whose colloquial compliment about two young girls was taken sexually and landed him in jail is free but unhappy.

Otis "Bullman" Hensley Jr., who has twice run unsuccessfully for governor, said his offer to trade "a good fattening hog" for a 13-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl accompanied by their aunt at a Don's Supersaver store was nothing more than an eastern Kentucky saying that is meant as a compliment to someone's children, the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader reported Tuesday.

However, the girls' father did not see the humor and pressed felony charges of first-degree attempted unlawful transaction with a minor against the politician. Hensley spent two days in jail in Harlan before he made bail and prosecutor J.D. Smith said authorities have determined Hensley "absolutely meant no harm" by his comment.

The charges were dropped on condition that Hensley apologize to the family and have no further contact with them.

Hensley said he was outraged.

"Anyone can go get a warrant against another person for any reason and have them put in jail," he said. "That should not be allowed."

Police cite computer rage in teen's arrest

PALM BAY, Fla., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Police in Florida say a 15-year-old boy flew into a rage, attacking his mother and older brother over changes made to the family computer.

Palm Bay police investigators said the teenager became angry after learning of the computer privilege changes and chased his mother with a knife, pushing her repeatedly before striking his older brother with a sugar cane, WKMG-TV in Orlando reported Tuesday.

The teenager, who allegedly told police he had felt threatened by his mother and brother, was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center in Sharpes Sunday. He was charged with aggravated assault and battery.
