STEPHENVILLE, Texas, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Texas' Tarleton State University and dozens of other schools are offering students the option of using collegiate rodeo practice for physical education credits.

Sarah Neely, spokeswoman for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, said an estimated 50 percent of the 130 schools that participate in the association offer rodeo-related physical education courses, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported Monday.

"You hear a lot of people talk about their eight-minute abs, but we offer the eight-second total workout," Jerod Johnston, assistant rodeo coach at Tarleton, said of the required time limit for riding a rodeo bronco.

Tarleton President Dennis McCabe said the activities involved in rodeo offer an exhausting workout.

"For a young woman to ride a horse at full speed, jump off and tie a goat is awfully active," McCabe said. "For a young man to ride a bronc -- that's pretty physical. And we don't have a problem giving credit for it."
