Man bashes computers over unopened gift

OSAKA, Japan, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- An ex-employee of an online clothing sales company in Japan expressed remorse in court for smashing 22 computers after learning his boss hadn't opened a gift.

The 31-year-old man said he became angry when he discovered his gift hadn't been opened by the Osaka company's president, Asahi Shimbun reported. He pleaded guilty to charges of obstructing business with force.

The defendant's attorney said the man was sorry for what he did and sought leniency from the court.

Prosecutors said the man began working part-time in the company's shipping department in January and in July he gave a box of jellies as a thank-you gift to the president.

His employer, apparently too busy, left the unopened box under his desk. When the man found out his gift had been set aside, he went on his workplace rampage, destroying the computers. While about a dozen people were in the office, no one was injured.

Two boys' joyride ends with arrest

NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- An 11-year-old boy, with a younger brother riding shotgun, survived a joyride in New York unscathed but took out two signs and an SUV before hitting a pole.

The underage driver and his 7-year-old brother were taken into police custody after the final collision, the Staten Island Advance reported Monday. Their 14-year-old brother wasn't in the car but also was arrested for allegedly getting into an altercation with officers at the scene.

Police allege the 11-year-old got behind the wheel of a green Ford Taurus with his younger sibling in the passenger seat, and set off on a wild ride through Port Richmond Sunday.

"The kids in the car took off like a bat out of hell," said Joe Wright, who lives nearby.

Wright said when the young driver became blocked by one car, he nearly took out another motorist while turning around before eventually crashing into an SUV, a stop sign, a school crossing sign and then a utility pole.

The owner of the vehicle is still a mystery, but onlookers said it may have been stolen from a junkyard.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A Wal-Mart in Ohio isn't only known for rolled-back prices, it's also known as a place to ask a girl on a date and get married.

Chester Eldridge and Danna Hornbeck met during the Springfield, Ohio, Wal-Mart's orientation in March and wed in the store's lawn and garden department, the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News reported.

"We've come around all the way now," Elridge said after his Wal-Mart wedding last week.

"We met here, he asked me out here," the new bride said. "Why not?"

Elridge, 51, is a supervisor in the store's Tire & Lube Express. His wife, 45, is a supervisor in the arts and crafts department.

Customer service supervisor Kendra Kitzmiller said she thinks its the first time anyone said their "I do's" in that particular store.

"We're very proud to be a family-oriented store," said Kitzmiller, one of the wedding organizers.

An "Attention, Wal-Mart shoppers," announcement interrupted the ceremony. But after the minister proclaimed the pair man and wife, cheers could be heard in the customer service department -- on the opposite side of the store from where the wedding took place.

Golden retriever adopts baby kitten

STEPHENS CITY, Va., Oct. 8 (UPI) -- Honey, a golden retriever from Stephens City, Va., hadn’t given birth in 18 months, but the cries of Precious, an orphaned kitten, made her a mother again.

The Martin family rescued Precious after Jimmy Martin found the tiny kitten near his workplace.

"Two or three days later, she (Honey) started lactating," said Martin. "She’s like a mother to this kitten."

Martin’s wife, Kathy, said the first time she saw Honey mothering the kitten her jaw dropped, the Winchester (Va.) Star reported Monday.

"This is another species all together, not even a cat," she said. "I’ve heard of animals having litters and taking two, but never lactating because something new came in."

The Martins asked a veterinarian about Honey and Precious and he confirmed that such maternal acts do happen on rare occasions.

Reports of a cat nursing a pug puppy and a dog nursing a piglet, as well as a tiger at a zoo in Thailand reportedly caring for a litter of piglets, have all circulated in the media.
