Size works against big shark's longevity

DORCHESTER, England, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A 295-pound shark that likely was a major underwater predator had its size work against it recently after a British fisherman deemed it too big to release.

Angler James Allen said his initial reaction to catching the massive fish off the British island of Guernsey had been to simply release it, but the creature's remarkable size made it too tempting of a trophy, the Guernsey Press reported Wednesday.

"We weren’t planning on keeping it but we thought that it must be a record so we brought it in," Allen said. "We would have thrown it back otherwise, because it’s only recreational fishing so I don’t usually think you should keep them."

Ultimately the porbeagle shark found its way to a local supermarket, where it quickly became a hot seller.

The shark species has been facing extinction in the region, but experts have suggested using individual responsibility should keep the impressive creatures safe.
