MADRID, June 5 (UPI) -- A Spanish opposition leader is introducing an initiative to the country's parliament that would create a commission to write words for the country's anthem.

Opposition leader Mariano Rajoy wants a commission to write lyrics for the Royal Spanish March, which was adopted as the country's national anthem in the late 18th century, the BBC reported Tuesday.

The song has never had official words to go with it, despite multiple attempts to write them.

However, some in the country voiced skepticism that a commission would be able to write words with nationwide appeal.

"For me, having words or lyrics in the national anthem is not very important," one Madrid man told the BBC. "Music is OK. It's fine to identify a country with music, but a country with words, no I don't like it."

Rajoy said a parliamentary commission should be able to write a verse for the song in two or three months.
