NEW YORK, May 24 (UPI) -- A new DNA test for dogs will let mutt owners know just what breeds are mixed in their pets' pedigrees.

"We think it's going to primarily appeal to mixed-breed owners who are just plain curious," Daisy Okas of the American Kennel Club told USA Today. "People come up to our booth at shows all the time asking."

Two companies will offer the DNA tests this summer.

The Wisdom Panel MX Mixed Breed Analysis requires a blood sample and will be done in veterinarians' offices. It is expected to cost $130 and covers 134 breeds, USA Today said.

Another DNA test, the Canine Heritage Breed Test, can be done at home with a cheek swab and covers 38 dog breeds for $71.95.

Many owners of mixed-breed dogs are curious about their pedigrees.

"Does it really matter? In reality, no. But some people want to know," Bonnie Beaver, past president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
