PALERMO, Italy, April 11 (UPI) -- People in the Sicilian town of Corleone attempted to exorcise the ghost of famed mafia boss Bernardo Provenzano on Wednesday by engaging in a "freedom run."

By gathering nearly 150 young students and having them race across the Italian locale, the town's residents tried to reclaim their town from the notoriety it earned in 2006 as the location of Provenzano's arrest, the Italian news agency ANSA said.

"With this mini-marathon, the young people of Corleone have reclaimed a place that had become a symbol of 'old Corleone,'" event organizers said.

To help round out the ceremonial event, organizers gave the official keys to the city to the police that arrested the dreaded mafia boss.

At nearly the same time in the Italian city of Palermo, the 74-year-old Cosa Nostra head was on trial for murder.

Despite his major part in both events, Provenzano himself remained in prison in the town of Terni, where ANSA said he followed the trial via a video link.
