Guinea pig shelter faces closure

FOREST PARK, Ohio, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- An Ohio couple said they will move rather than shut down their guinea pig rescue operation.

The city of Forest Park has notified Karen and Steve Oehlerts that their shelter, This Little Piggy and Me, violates an ordinance against breeding animals in residential areas. The Oehlerts say they do not breed guinea pigs, although occasionally an abandoned pregnant female gives birth while in their care.

The couple hopes to work something out with authorities. But if not, they plan to move the shelter elsewhere.

"You'd better believe it," Karen Oehlerts told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "There's no way Steve and I are going to abandon these little guys. They need us. We've done more good than harm here."

The Oehlerts provide guinea pigs for adoption. Would-be adopters have to fill out a detailed form to ensure they are qualified to care for a guinea pig.
