Nurses top list of trusted professions

NEW YORK, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Nurses make up the most trusted profession in the United States while car salesmen are the least trusted in a USA Today/Gallup poll.

The telephone poll of 1,009 people nationwide found 84 percent of people considered nurses' ethics as "very high" or "high" compared with 7 percent feeling that way about car salesmen.

Pharmacists scored second to nurses with 73 percent, while veterinarians had 71 percent trust, the poll said.

Clergy and college teachers tied at 58 percent on the ethics scale, while police officers managed just 54 percent trust.

At the bottom of the list, advertising practitioners were second last to car salesmen with 11 percent trust, while HMO managers logged 12 percent for ethics.

The poll was conducted Dec. 8-10.
