LOS ANGELES, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A movie company has angered some religious groups by planning to open a horror movie called "Black Christmas" on Christmas Day in the United States.

"It's wrong," Joyce Brothers, the celebrity psychologist and advice columnist, told the New York Daily News. "No matter what your faith, this is a time for peace and understanding. It's dreadful to do something like this, that exploits the ugliest and most negative of human emotions, on a holiday."

The movie is a remake of a 1974 Warner Brothers film with the same title, which starred Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder as sorority sisters stalked by a killer over Christmas break. That film was released on Dec. 20.

Catholic groups are especially angry.

"It's not showing any sensitivity to Christians. It's the birth of Our Lord," said Kiera McCaffrey, of the Catholic League.

The new movie features Katie Cassidy ("When a Stranger Calls") and Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy's kid sister in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"). Dimension Films, the distributor, says it intends no disrespect and is just keeping up with the old tradition of providing an alternative to heartwarming Christmas movies.
