India corporation drowns in lifeguard woes

PANAJI, India, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The Goa Tourism Development Corporation in India has found only one of its 129 recent lifeguard hires has the swimming skills required by state regulations.

The discovery adds new urgency to the corporation's search for qualified lifeguards for the 65-mile coastline as it has been ordered by the state government to hire 100 qualified lifeguards, at least 20 of them women, The Times of London reported Thursday.

Only one of the recruits was able to swim the required distance in the allotted time and up to 50 were unable to complete the swim.

"I am looking for professional swimmers but I got this," said Sanjit Rodrigues, the corporation's managing director. "We will now shortlist 79 of the candidates who had managed the distance in 15 minutes and are more or less qualified. We are running a 6-week intensive lifesaving course for them and we hope they will achieve the internationally recognized standard of 9 minutes."
