LONG BEACH, N.Y., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Three Long Beach, N.Y., teenage girls were in a superhero battle with their principal over their right to wear red capes and white briefs on "Superhero Day."

The 17-year-old high school seniors wanted to dress up as Captain Underpants, the children's book character about two fourth graders and the superhero they accidentally created, who -- ironically in this case -- is their principal.

The girls put on flesh-colored leotards and stockings underneath their briefs and cape.

The problem was their costumes looked too real for Long Beach Principal Nicholas Restivo, who was concerned the girls looked naked from afar. He told them they had to change or they could not be on campus, Newsday reported.

Believing they were singled out when other students wore skimpier outfits, the girls left school.

Restivo said he did not like the furor and media attention the incident brought to the school.

"I think it's been so blown out of proportion," he said. "Give me a break."
