HALTEN, Norway, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- A Norwegian man who launched a message in a bottle 40 years ago with schoolmates has had a contact from a recipient in the Arctic Circle.

On Nov. 24, 1966, Bjorn Magne Moen and four friends sealed a bottle with a dated note in it containing their first names and ages and the name of their school in the fishing village of Halten, Aftenposten reported.

Earlier this year, it was found washed ashore in the arctic archipelago of Svalbard, Europe's northernmost territory.

The VG newspaper began researching, and through old school records, managed to connect with Moen, who said he had given up on getting any more contacts.

"We sent a lot of messages in bottles back then," he said. "We had a book where we wrote down when we sent them and where they were found."
