The Michigan Senate Tuesday approved a bill to end issuance of the current blue-on-blue license plate next year and sent the legislation to Gov. Jennifer Granholm, the Detroit Free Press reported. Advertisement "The old blue plate had a good run in Michigan but it is time to move to a design that uses modern technology and improves visibility," said Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land. Land said the new license plate must be easier to read at night than the blue plate issued since July 1982. The newspaper estimates it will cost more than $10 million to phase out and replace some 5.6 million blue license tags, and a final design for the replacement plate has not yet been approved.
