MUSKEGON, Mich., May 12 (UPI) -- Fire officials in Muskegon, Mich., say there's a reason not to use smoke bombs indoors -- just ask the man with a pesky squirrel who nearly lost his home.

The 57-year-old homeowner and a friend got two rodent smoke bombs and set them off in a glass candy dish in the attic Wednesday.

Smoke filled the home's attic where a squirrel had set up residence, and heat from the devices eventually set fire to a ceiling joist -- burning through the kitchen ceiling and causing about $5,000 in damage, the Muskegon Chronicle reported Friday.

Firefighters put out the attic fire about 5 a.m. Thursday.

"Rodent smoke bombs are clearly marked in large lettering: 'Do not use indoors or underneath buildings,'" said Muskegon Fire Inspector Scott Hemmelsbach.

The homeowner admitted he had not read the instructions.
