WASHINGTON, April 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney was booed as he threw the ceremonial first pitch at the home opener Tuesday of the Washington Nationals.

The vice president made his way to the RFK Stadium mound and threw a pitch to Washington catcher Brian Schneider. The ball took one hop to reach home plate. Cheney, clad in a Nationals warm-up jacket, smiled throughout the experience.

Fans at the game booed the vice president, although the White House pool report of the event said some cheers could be heard.

President George Bush, who handled the first-pitch duties with the Nationals last year, tossed out the first pitch at a game in Cincinnati last week. On Tuesday he was visiting the Midwest, talking about healthcare.

Cheney didn't bring the home team much luck, as the Nationals managed just three hits in a 7-1 loss to the Mets.
