Foreign cheeses top Wisconsin festival

MADISON, Wis., March 24 (UPI) -- The top three winners of the 2006 Biennial World Champion Cheese Contest in Madison, Wis., came from Switzerland and the Netherlands, it was announced Friday.

Top honors went to Walo von Muhlenen of Switzerland, who made a cheese called Emmentaler Switzerland Premier, the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association said.

Rene Rovers of the Netherlands was the first runner-up with a Gouda cheese. Third place went to H. Rijkee, also from the Netherlands, who brought a product called Young Gouda Spice.

Host Wisconsin was first in 19 categories.

The contest drew nearly 1,800 entries from 18 nations, breaking the previous record of 1,280 items in 2004, the Wisconsin Ag Connection reported.
