OAKLAND, Calif., March 8 (UPI) -- A woman accused Oakland, Calif., Mayor Jerry Brown of breaking her cell phone to keep her from recording Brown's insensitive comments about nightclub patrons.

A spokesman for Brown, a Democrat who is running for California attorney general, denied the claim stemming from Brown's tour to investigate police complaints that they have to babysit nightclubs.

Ayesha Wilson, 26, said she filed a criminal complaint against Brown in the early Sunday incident outside the Telegraph Avenue club, where she tried to get help for her bleeding friend who was lying on the ground.

"Then I heard this voice behind me say, 'That is what happens when you come to a place like this,'" Wilson told The San Francisco Chronicle.

"I turned around and asked, 'Who are you?' " Wilson said.

"I am the mayor of Oakland," she said the man replied.

After more talk, Wilson said she recorded Brown's racist comments, but he squeezed her cell phone until it broke.

A spokesman denied Brown broke the phone and said he was trying to calm a volatile situation at the time.
