LONDON, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Britain's Royal Mail has riled the Hindu community by issuing a Christmas stamp depicting a Hindu couple worshipping baby Jesus.

The Hindu Forum of Britain asked mail officials to redesign the stamp, eliminating the markings on the couple's foreheads, the BBC reports.

A Royal Mail spokesman said no offense was intended but redesigning the stamp is not feasible. The spokesman said the image was taken from a 17th century painting hanging in a Bombay gallery.

"Royal Mail sources claim that the original painting printed on the face of the stamp is dated 1620," said Ramesh Kallidai, secretary-general of the Hindu Forum.

"While many people doubt the authenticity of the age of the painting, we believe that even if this were true, it would be insensitive to use it at a time when the issue of conversions in India has been a subject of heated debate."
