LONDON, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A British sailor was rescued after two days drifting in the English Channel on half a boat without food or water.

Phillip van der Loo, 52, had only a crate of beer when he left Southampton Monday for the Channel Islands after a row with his wife, Geraldine.

The engines failed on his 28-foot, unfinished boat, there were no windows or radio and it leaked. Rescuers said he was in a "poor state".

Said van der Loo: "I have no idea what happened."
