CHARLESTON, S.C., June 1 (UPI) -- A Charleston, S.C., dentist has filed a $21 million libel suit against a couple who accused her of desecrating graves to build a home.

William Baker and his wife Marjorie Schramm bought a 3-acre plot of land with a small house on it from Dr. Olivia Palmer in 2001 for $454,500.

Baker and his wife said they knew of a small black graveyard on the property, but neighbors later told them hundreds had been buried on the land, including some right under their house. In March, they sued Palmer for unspecified damages, saying the property is now worthless.

But Palmer struck back with the libel and slander lawsuit, the Charleston Post and Courier said Wednesday.

She denies the couple's accusations and claims the allegations have caused her emotional distress and led to patients leaving her practice, depriving her of income.
