Rhino courtship in Miami to be violent

MIAMI, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A 14-year-old female rhinoceros is being brought to MetroZoo in Miami for what promises to be a violent courtship, The Miami Herald reported Friday.

Zoo handlers are afraid they know what to expect. They will be standing by with fire extinguishers and large vehicles.

"Rhino lovemaking is serious," said Metrozoo's Ron Magill. "It's one of the few advanced mammals where actually the foreplay can be kind of violent. They like to knock each other around quite a bit."

Rosie the rhino has a history of being offish, but her new companion, Toshi, has a history of success.

Rosie has been paired with a male rhino in Atlanta but no offspring were produced.

Toshi, a 2,500-pound black rhino who been at the zoo for 21 years, has sired two baby rhinos with his previous mate. They have been sent off to other zoos.

The world's black rhino population has diminished from 100,000 in the 1970s to 15,000 and zoo keepers hope Rosie and Toshi will do their part to bring that number back up.

Couple who met on line name son Yahoo

BUCHAREST, Romania, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A Romanian couple who met and courted online decided to honor the Internet when their son was born so they named him Yahoo.

Daily Libertea reports the Christmas baby's full name is Lucian Yahoo Dragoman.

"We named him Lucian Yahoo after my father and the Net, the main beacon of my life," his mother, Cornelia Dragoman, told the newspaper.

Nonu Dragoman and his wife both lived in Transylvania, the Romanian region best-known to the outside world as the homeland of Count Dracula. But they were first introduced to each other electronically and decided they wanted a closer relationship after three months of communicating via the Internet.

They picked Yahoo for their son's name because it is one of the best-known portals.

Sheep's brain found in school dressing

VESTAL, N.Y., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Students in an upstate New York high school got something unexpected with their cafeteria salad dressing -- preserved sheep's brain.

Officials at Vestal High School near Binghamton say someone stole the brain matter from a classroom where it was being used in an anatomy class and placed it in the dressing as a prank, the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reported Friday. They say there is little risk of anyone getting sick because the material found in the dressing carried no infectious disease and did not have enough preservative to cause problems.

Parents received letters after Wednesday's incident advising them to consult family doctors if their children might have used the dressing.

Investigators say that the brain must have been dumped in the dressing at least two hours before it was discovered. It sank to the bottom of the container, and students ladling out dressing did not notice it immediately.

Student John Clark gave the newspaper a brief summary of the situation -- "It's gross."

Oyster shell with Jesus image to be sold

ZURICH, Switzerland, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A Switzerland bar manager plans to sell an oyster shell he says bears the likeness of Jesus Christ.

Matteo Brandi, 38, reportedly hopes to repeat the success of a Florida woman who sold a grilled cheese sandwich said to bear an image of the Virgin Mary for $28,000, the BBC said.

Brandi said he had found the shell, whose contents have since been eaten, in a batch two years ago. The oyster stuck to his hand as if God was calling him, he said.

Brandi, who describes himself as a devout Catholic, told Switzerland's Le Matin newspaper he had kept the shell on top of the bar's stereo after he found it. Now a bank is taking care of it for him.
