PORT ORANGE, Fla., July 19 (UPI) -- A Florida man is facing battery charges after his girlfriend accused him of smacking her around with a 3-foot long alligator, TheSmokingGun.com said Monday.

David Havennar, 41, also faces a charge of illegally possessing an alligator after Volusia County sheriff's deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call.

Nancy Monico, 39, told deputies she was angry with Havennar Saturday morning because there was no more alcohol left, and said she bit him on the hand.

He then allegedly began hitting her with his fists and throwing beer bottles at her. When she tried to escape, deputies said Havennar grabbed his pet alligator from the bathtub and swung it at her.

Monico suffered minor injuries to her lip, legs, and back area, investigators said. She told them Havennar was torturing the reptile, but state wildlife officials said the creature appears to be perfectly healthy.
