ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 30 (UPI) -- The Pakistan Cricket Board earned $21 million from the recent cricket series between India and Pakistan, the board's chairman said Sunday.

The money is a record income for Pakistan from a cricket series. India and Pakistan, old cricket rivals, had not played a domestic match for nearly 15 years.

India agreed to tour Pakistan after bilateral relations improved following a historic peace-making trip to Islamabad by the then Indian Prime Minister Bihari Vajpayee in January.

The board's chairman Shaharyar Khan said the cricket series also helped improve relations between the two countries, which have fought three wars and countless skirmishes during the last 56 years.

Cricket also brought prominent Indian citizens to Pakistan, such as the son and daughter of Sonia Gandhi, who now heads the ruling Congress party. Her husband, Rajiv Gandhi, and mother in law were both prime ministers of India. Indira Gandhi was the daughter of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

"The India-Pakistan cricket series has once again proven that sport can go a long way in promoting peace," said Khan.
