PLEASANTVILLE, N.J., May 5 (UPI) -- Students and parents of a New Jersey middle school are stuck with a coach who apparently humiliated a 13-year-old at an awards banquet with a crybaby award.

On Tuesday night the education board voted 5-4 to fire basketball coach James Guillen, 24, after a sports award ceremony in which he presented the boy with a trophy featuring a golden figurine of a baby and told the audience it was a "Crybaby Award," the Press of Atlantic City reported Wednesday.

The boy's family said he was humiliated.

But the board's solicitor and district Superintendent Edwin Coyle indicated that the school board's vote to fire Guillen was not valid because it was not based on the recommendation of the superintendent.

Under New Jersey law, a school board can fire a school district employee only on the recommendation of the district's superintendent.

Coyle recommended to the board that Guillen receive a variety of other sanctions -- but retain his job.
