MIAMI, April 23 (UPI) -- A 74-year-old Sanibel, Fla., woman was dragged into a canal by a 9-foot alligator but fought back and, with some help from her husband, escaped.

The alligator was later captured and destroyed, the St. Petersburg Times reported Friday.

Jane Keefer was doing some gardening in her canal-side home when the gator grabbed her and pulled her into the water, investigators said.

"She struck the alligator several times in the nose and it let go," said Larry Gregory of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "When she came back up, the gator tried to bite her again on her arm."

Her husband, William Keefer, came running from their house and pulled her to shore. She was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and released.

"I'm doing fine," she said later. She said she didn't want to talk about it any more than that because, "I don't want to think about it."
