SKOKIE, Ill., March 9 (UPI) -- Chicago area police are hunting a thief whose preference for loot threatens the summer barbecuing season.

At least 15 residents in Skokie have filed reports in the last two months over outdoor BBQ grilling lids being stolen, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday.

"We're kind of curious about what the motivation may be," said Sgt. Mike Healy, a police spokesman. "There doesn't seem to be a great resale market."

But grill store owners say some of the grill lids may be ending up at area scrap yards. Grill lids are made of aluminum or cast iron, both of which are sought after.

"These guys can probably get $5 for each of them, and when you have 15 lids that adds up," said a gas grill salesman in Evanston. "They aren't going to get rich off of it."

Replacing lids can cost hundreds of dollars.

The thefts are taking place at single-family homes. The built-in grills are located at either the backyard or side yard of the homes and in clear view from alleys.
