LONDON, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Britain's Turner Prize has been awarded to transvestite potter Grayson Perry, who accepted the $35,000 award at a London restaurant dressed in a girl's frock.

The London Telegraph said Perry, described by some critics as "a deeply weird artist," makes classically shaped pots, which now sell for as much as $26,000 each.

But his words are decorated with what he calls memories of his unhappy childhood, with scenes of child abuse, erotica or angry social comment.

The Telegraph said his pottery has such titles such as Posh Bastard's House, Boring Cool People and Art Dealer Being Beaten to Death. Although controversial, his work has been praised for transforming pottery into a modern, beautiful, humorous and unsettling art form.

Happily married to a psychotherapist, with an 11-year-old daughter, he says dressing as a woman helps him develop his sensuous side.

Sponsored by Britain's Channel 4, the prize is given to a British artist under 50 years of age for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of work during the past 12 months.
