Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Cuban trumpeter and bandleader Mario Bauza was born this day in Havana in 1911. He died in 1993. Bauza gave trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie a major career lift in 1939 by bringing him into Cab Calloway's high profile band.

Pianist Norma Teagarden, younger sister of trombone master Jack Teagarden, was born this day in 1911 in Vernon, Texas.


Singer-pianist Blossom Dearie was born this day in 1926 in East Durham, N.Y.


Drummer Oliver Jackson was born this day in 1933 in Detroit. He died in 1993.


This was also the day, in 1940, when the Glenn Miller Band recorded its hit "Pennsylvania 6-5000" for the Bluebird label. Jerry Gray wrote the song.


On this day in 1987, Ray Charles testified before Congress on behalf of increased funding for hearing research, telling lawmakers: "My eyes are my handicap, but my ears are my opportunity."

Sting, Dr. John, the Allman Brothers Band, the Neville Brothers, the Staple Singers and the Radiators were among the headliners at the 31st annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 2000.
