Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Trumpeter Booker Little was born this day in 1938 in Memphis. He recorded with Max Roach, Eric Dolphy and John Coltrane, and led his own group at New York's Five Spot three months before his death in 1961.

Guitarist and 1960s jazz/rock pioneer Larry Coryell was born this day in 1943. Coryell remains one of the strongest solo improvisers on the guitar.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


On the New York jazz scene... the Claudia Acuna quintet Vanguard is at the Jazz Standard this week. The Heath Brothers are at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. Latin singer Albita is at the Blue Note. Bassist Harvie S and Eye Contact are at The Zinc Bar tonight. The Pete Malinverni duo is at Sophia's.

Barbara Carroll is at Birdland tonight. The Rachel Z trio is at Sweet Rhythm tonight and Thursday. The Junior Mance trio opens The Jazz Gallery's new "Early Set @ The Jazz Gallery" series tonight.

There's a tribute to Lionel Hampton at Iridium this week featuring the Terry Gibbs quintet with David "Fathead" Newman, Joey DeFrancesco, Gerry Gibbs and Howard Alden. Pianist Eugene Maslov's trio opens the set each night.


The International Latin Music Hall of Fame holds its fifth annual Induction Ceremony and Concert tonight at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture in the Bronx. The newest inductees are Juan Luis Guerra, Ismael Quintana, Roberto Roena, Manny Oquendo, Arturo Sandoval, Trini Lopez, Nelson Ned, Ray Santos, Juan Gabriel, Flaco Jimenez, Justi Barreto, Jose Luis Monero, Raphael and Pucho Brown. Posthumous inductees include Desi Arnaz, Esther Borja, Alberto Beltran, Joseito Fernandez, Gonzalo Roig, Eliseo Grenet, Maria Grever, Consuelo Velazquez and Alvaro Dalmar. This year's Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Johnny Ventura and the Beny More Memorial Award goes to Jose Alberto "El Canario."


Pianist Cliff Korman brings the latest version of his band "The Brazilian Tinge" to Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight.


In and around Boston... pianist Fred Hersch and singer Norma Winstone are at The Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. Pianist Laszlo Gardony's trio is at Ryles in Cambridge tonight. The Berklee College of Music's Percussion Department presents its annual "Percussion Week" events through Saturday. This year's vibraphone-heavy schedule includes one of the premier voices on vibes Jay Hoggard, plus a concert by four faculty vibists, "Four by Four: A Tribute to Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo, Milt Jackson, and Cal Tjader."

On the New Orleans jazz scene... the Frank Zappatistas are at the Blue Nile. Earl Brown is at Cafe Sbisa. Leigh "Little Queenie" Harris is at Dos Jefes. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at El Matador. The Steve Yocum trio is at Fritzel's. Thaddeus Ford and Lusher are at the Funky Butt. Mark Braud is at Harrah's.

Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are at Le Bon Temps Roule. The Johnny Vidacovich trio is at the Maple Leaf. John Brunious leads tonight's band at Preservation Hall. Larry Coryell is at the University of New Orleans Sandbar performance space. The John Mahoney Big Band is at Snug Harbor.

On the recording front...


The Fantasy jazz group has released five more remastered recordings from its Prestige and Fantasy catalogs. They are "Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet," "Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet," "Jazz at Oberlin" by the Dave Brubeck quartet, the Vince Guaraldi trio's "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus" and the 1975 duo recording entitled simply "The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album."


Accurate Records is just out with "Purple Cha Cha Heels," the debut recording by the streamlined, Boston-based mambo band Brass Roots. The quintet includes trombonists Jim Messbauer and Russell Jewell, saxophonist Tim Mayer, trumpeter Scott Aruda and percussionist Ana Norgaard.

Accurate has also released "Slo & Lo" by guitarist Jeff Friedman. The composer, arranger and orchestrator is joined by pianist Joe Mulholland, bassist Michael Farquharson drummer Andy Plaisted and bassist and singer Eric Mingus.
