Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Bandleader and trumpeter Lu Watters was born this day in 1911 in Santa Cruz, Calif. In the early 1940s, his Yerba Buena Jazz Band helped revived the King Oliver-style traditional jazz sound.

Valve-trombonist Bob Brookmeyer was born this day in 1929 in Kansas City, Mo.


Pianist Bobby Timmons was born this date in 1935 in Philadelphia. Inspired by Bud Powell and Red Garland, Timmons made his mark on jazz as a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. His composition "Moanin'" became a classic and essential part of the Messengers' repertoire.


Bass player, photographer and jazz ambassador Milt Hinton died this day in 2000 at age 90 after a lengthy illness. Hinton was one of the most heavily recorded musicians of all time, participating in literally thousands of recording sessions as a jazz player and studio musician for nearly 70 years. His walking bass line graced projects by Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Paul McCartney.

On this day in 1936, clarinetist Barney Bigard first recorded the tune "Caravan" in Los Angeles for the Variety label.

On the New York jazz scene... the Ahmad Jamal trio is at Iridium. There is a Lee Morgan retrospective tribute at Birdland through Saturday with Eddie Henderson, Joe Lovano, Benny Green, Steve Kirby and Winard Harper. Jackie McLean and the Cedar Walton trio are at the Village Vanguard this week. Singers Jane Monheit and Andy Bey are at the Blue Note.

Alfredo De La Fe, a top violinist in Salsa music, has organized tonight's "Latino Musicians Against Drugs" 2002 holiday concert at the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx. Musicians include Jose Alberto -- "El Canario" -- Giovanni Hidalgo, Dave Valentín, Jimmy Bosch, Larry Harlow and Alfredo De La Fe with his orchestra. Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri and Johnny Pacheco.

Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Bobby Sanabria and Quarteto Ache are at Smoke for a record release party. The Manhattan School of Music Jazz Philharmonic performs works by Dave Liebman, Daniel Schnyder, Ted Rosenthal and Michael Abene tonight at Borden Auditorium with Liebman and Rosenthal as featured guests.

In Philadelphia... the Mikey Roker quartet plays the music of Harry Warren at Ortlieb's Jazzhaus tonight. The Shakira Jones quartet is at Chris's Jazz Cafe.


Singer Regina Belle is at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight through Sunday.


On the Chicago jazz scene... saxophonist Benny Golson is with the Mike Kocour trio through Sunday at the Jazz Showcase. The Ron Freidman quintet is at Andy's tonight. Judy Roberts is at The Chicago Firehouse. The Scott Stevenson duo is at The Foundry in Fox Valley Mall.

Alan Gresik's Swing Shift Orchestra is at the Green Mill tonight. Erwin Helfer and the Chicago Boogie Ensemble are at Joe's BeBop Cafe and Jazz Emporium. John Wright is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Steve Ditzell duo is at Pops of Highwood.
