THE THOUSAND DOLLAR KITCHEN ISLAND

If you've ever envied the kind of kitchens professional chefs have, there's a self-contained kitchen "cooking island" that may turn your mundane kitchen into a showplace. The only hang-up is the device and its myriad tools are priced at $999.

The folks at kitchenlink.com are listing the set manufactured and sold by the John Boos Co., which has been making kitchen appliances and cutting boards since the 1860s.

The units come in four different basic butcher block sizes, forming the basis of the island design: from 36 by 24 inches to 48 by 30 inches.

Each table includes the cutting surface -- which is 4 inches thick -- legs and solid maple skirting. There's also a large wooden dovetailed maple drawer for cookbooks and other items. They units include a large, full-length lower drawer for larger items. The unit is 3 feet tall. There is also an optional rack for pots and pans with up to 15 hanging spots.

CHIP RECALL IS CLASSIC LESSON

It isn't very often you hear of a potato chip recall but recently Frito-Lay announced it was cooperating with federal regulators in the recall of 2 1/4 ounce packages of Fritos Corn Chips. The order went out to 10 states.

The recall is a classic example of concern over a product because it might have come in contact with some other substance or its package contained some other substance not on the contents list.

In this case the reason was that some of the product actually contained pieces of barbeque-flavored chips. These chips are made with soy protein, an ingredient that can cause an allergic reaction. Soy was not listed on the Frito packages because it is not an ingredient in that flavor of product.
