Swing drummer Specs Powell was born this day in 1922 in New York. He recorded with Gerry Mulligan and Teddy Wilson at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957 and as a member of the Monday Night at Birdland all-star group with Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller and Hank Mobley in 1958.

Also in 1922, guitarist Johnny Smith was born this day in Birmingham, Alabama.


Dutch pianist Misha Mengelberg was born this day in Kiev in 1935.


On this day in 1941, Gene Krupa recorded "After You've Gone" with trumpeter Roy Eldridge for the Okeh label.


The Harry James band recorded "James Session" on this day in 1942.
