Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Traditional jazz bass player Pops Foster was born this day in 1892 in McCall, La. He worked with the best in jazz throughout his career, including Fate Marable, Kid Ory, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Mezz Mezzrow and Earl Hines. Pops Foster died in 1969.

Trombonist Kai Winding was born this day in 1922 in Aarhus, Denmark. Fame first came as a soloist in the Stan Kenton orchestra in 1946, eight years before he co-led a popular two-trombone quintet with J.J. Johnson. He died in 1983 in Spain.


Blues singer Big Joe Turner was born this day in 1911 in Kansas City. His classic 1956 album "Boss of the Blues" featured ace jazz players Pete Brown, Lawrence Brown and Pete Johnson.

The Knitting Factory schedule tonight includes the Anticon "miracle mile" tour with Sole, Restiform Bodies and Kevin Blechdom, The Bad Plus Ethan Iverson, Reid Anderson and David King, and the bands Stupid and Huge. Frank Lacy's 14-Piece Vibe Tribe is at The Jazz tonight.

North Star Records' New England Jazz All-Stars quintet will be joined tonight by featured guest Mike Turk on harmonica at CAV in Providence, Rhode Island.


Kim Waters and Maysa are at Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia tonight.


The Noel Freidline Quintet is at the Dancin' in the Streets series in Atlantic Beach, Fla., this afternoon.

Devin Phillips' quartet is at the Funky Butt. Louis Ford and Topsy Chapman are at Satcbmo's jazz room at Harrah's.

Bob French is at Le Meridien. Roland Guerin and Ronald Markham are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. Lionel Ferbos leads the band at Palm Court. John Brunious is in charge tonight at Preservation Hall. Germain Bazzle is at Snug Harbor. Carl LeBlanc, Kiki Bonilla and Eddie Bo lead the bands at Storyville District Jazz Parlor.

The Pacifica Jazz Festival continues tonight at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica with Jim and Morning Nichols, and Mike Vax and his Great American Jazz Band.


Trumpeter Ray Vega's quintet brings its tour of Spain to Cifuentes (Guadalajara) tonight.
