KANSAS STUDENT TURNS BOMB MAKER

Police in Wellington, Kansas report that a 14-year-old boy was found with a potentially deadly bomb stashed in his home. The Kansas City Star says that the boy, whose name has not been released, had recently threatened his high school and is now in police custody.

A tip led officers to the explosive device, which was dismantled at the scene. Other bomb-making equipment was allegedly found.

The boy is charged with making a threat via telephone against the school he is attending this year. He was already on probation in connection with an unrelated incident.

TEEN DANCING UNDER DEBATE IN SEATTLE

In a city famous for grunge music, it would seem an anomaly that there would be a question as to whether or not Seattle teens should be allowed to dance. But, according to the Post-Intelligencer, current teen dancing laws are under fire in that city.

A meeting will be held this week to discuss the city's ban on minors going to "adult" clubs when non-minors are present (except for employees). In recent months the city's powerful music industry has been lobbying for the city to drop the ban on the grounds that young people currently have few places to go.

Others counter that young people are already growing up too quickly and times must change, along with laws that some people say dictate morality.

'GONE WITH WIND' HEIRS QUIT SUIT

Ever since author Alice Randall wrote "The Wind Done Gone," heirs of Margaret Mitchell (who wrote the original "Gone With the Wind") have been trying to keep Randall from publishing her book. They claim that the book is not the parody of "GWTW" that Randall claims, but contains so much of the texture and characterizations of the original book that it infringes on its copyrights.

Now, according to the Boston Globe, publisher Houghton Mifflin Co. reports that a quiet settlement was reached that will "end the litigation."

The settlement effectively clears the way for full publication of the Randall book. In it, the narrator is Cynara, said to be a black half-sister of "Gone With the Wind" heroine Scarlett O'Hara.

I DON'T HAVE A GUN ... JUST POT

Another odd occurrence has taken place at an airport checkpoint. Police at the Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport had initially arrested a man who was questioned about an object that he called "a pen with a cigar cutter." Technically, it was a knife.

A scuffle ensued. During the encounter with security guards, it was discovered that the man also had a bag of marijuana.

The incident began when guards saw the man give the "knife" to a man in a wheelchair. The search that followed involved the shutting down of the busiest concourse at the airport for some three hours, one of the nation's busiest airline hubs. The Enquirer says that a hearing date has been set for May 20.
