NEW YORK, April 2 (UPI) -- Beverly Sills, who has spent most of her 72 years in the performing arts, will be stepping down as chairwoman of New York's Lincoln Center, the world's biggest performing arts center.

The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, in midtown Manhattan, is home to a dozen arts groups, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet, The Juilliard School and the New York Philharmonic.

Sills, a former opera singer, has been Lincoln Center's chairwoman since 1994. She said she will continue to serve in the post until a successor is picked -- but she's hoping to leave the job around May 1, when the center gets a new president, Reynold Levy.

"I figure once I lock in the date, it will also give a little incentive to the search committee to get going," Sills said in an interview published in Monday's New York Times.
