Drummer Jimmy Crawford was born in Memphis this day in 1910. He was a fixture in the Jimmy Lunceford band from 1929 to 1942.

Trumpeter Billy Butterfield was born this date in 1917 in Middleton, Ohio. This swing player had a big impact on the bands of Bob Crosby, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman.


Reed player and singer Joe Muranyi was born this day in 1928 in Martins Ferry, Ohio. He worked with many prominent Dixieland groups through the years and formed the traditional jazz group The Village Stompers in 1963. Muranyi was also the last clarinetist to perform and record regularly with the Louis Armstrong All Stars.


Trumpeter Kenny Wheeler was born this day in 1930 in Toronto, Canada.
