MOGADISHU, Somalia, May 5 (UPI) -- Somali troops killed two people Monday when they fired on demonstrators protesting rising food prices and counterfeit money in Mogadishu, officials said.

Insecurity in Somalia caused food prices to double while illegal print operations devalued the Somali currency.

Protesters shouted "down with those refusing the old money and down with the dollar-receivers" as they burned tires and threw stones in Mogadishu while demanding pay in U.S. dollars instead, the BBC reported.

U.N. officials say food prices forced more than 30 percent of the nation to look to international donors for food assistance.
