JERUSALEM, May 5 (UPI) -- An Egyptian-brokered cease-fire between Israel and Hamas leaders is expected to be signed within days, a senior Egyptian official said.

Israel will accept the agreement unofficially once "the Palestinian factions announce they accept the deal," The Jerusalem Post reported Monday in reference to a story published in Asharq Al-Awsat, a Saudi newspaper published in London.

"After we announce the cease-fire in Cairo, the sides will be obligated to it," the official told Asharq al-Awsat. "In addition, Israel will open the border crossings to Gaza in order to allow the transfer of commercial shipments, medicine, fuel and food."

Hamas threatened to escalate its actions against Israel if Ithe Israelis didn't agree to the cease-fire soon, Asharq al-Awsat reported.
