British man arrested under Terrorism Act

BRISTOL, England, April 18 (UPI) -- Police said they conducted a "controlled explosion" in the British community of Bristol Friday after a man was arrested under the Terrorism Act.

Homes in a cul-de-sac were evacuated during the operation but police did not say what materials were detonated, the BBC reported.

Police said the materials were being analyzed.

"A number of people were evacuated from neighboring homes as a precaution, and just after 2 a.m. the Explosives Ordnance Disposal Team conducted a controlled explosion at the location," Bristol Assistant Chief Constable Jackie Roberts said.

The 19-year-old suspect, arrested Thursday, was being questioned at an undisclosed location, officials said.

Police said the raid came within 24 hours of officers receiving intelligence about the man.

"We would like to reassure people that this arrest has been made at this stage to prevent harm," Roberts said during a news conference.

"This is likely to be a prolonged, complex and sensitive inquiry which may take some time."
