WASHINGTON, March 22 (UPI) -- Cantaloupes from the Honduran grower and packer Agropecuaria Montelibano should not be permitted to enter the United States, the FDA says.

The company's cantaloupes appear to be responsible for an outbreak of Salmonella Litchfield in the United States, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported. At least 16 cases have been reported in the United States and nine in Canada, with 14 people hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

Retailers, produce processors and food service operators are advised to get rid of any cantaloupes from the shipper. Consumers who have any cantaloupes on hand are advised to check with the store and to get rid of any from Montelibano.

The outbreak is still under investigation by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control.
