All four of the groups have laid claim to the title of the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee, so to help settle the matter the state hired experts to identify the rightful tribe and recently those experts took a step toward determining which one is most legitimate, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
At odds are The Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee of Dahlonega, The Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee Inc. of Cumming, The Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee Indians Inc. of Dahlonega and The Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee, Echota Fire Inc.,
The experts' study determined that The Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee Indians Inc. of Dahlonega, led by "Chief" Walker Dan Davis, was the most legitimate.
The chief's wife, Dola Davis said she was "excited to see the state council ruled the right way, that we were the originals."
The next step is the state Capitol, where legislators will be asked to put the official seal on the Davis group.
