Commissioners in North Lauderdale adopted a resolution April 29 and are trying to stir up interest in other towns, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. Margate was scheduled to vote Tuesday night.
"It's based out of frustration with the state Legislature ignoring the cities in South Florida," said North Lauderdale Commissioner Rich Moyle. "They don't really care too much what happens with South Florida."
The new state would include the city of Miami, the Keys, the east coast up to Jupiter and the west up to Fort Myers. The state line would divide Lake Okeechobee.
State Sen. Jeremy Ring, a Democrat who represents both North Lauderdale and Margate, said he sees the commissioners' point.
"South Florida feels like we're getting shafted by North Florida, and my friends in North Florida think they are getting shafted by South Florida," Ring said.
