LONDON, May 17 (UPI) -- A series of knitting patterns apparently modeled after creatures on the BBC series "Doctor Who" will not prompt legal action, the British broadcaster says.

While BBC executives initially threatened to sue the 26-year-old woman behind the knitting patterns to stop her from dispersing her creations, they have now asked her to consider a sanctioned product line, The Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

The woman's knitting creations, which vaguely recreate images of the monstrous "Who" Ood and Adipose characters, gained public notoriety when they appeared online.

The knitter, identified only by the nickname Mazzmatazz, had been requested cease and desist by BBC officials, who cited copyright law.

But the Telegraph said a public outcry against that legal threat led BBC officials to offer the woman a licensing deal linked to several other planned "Who" toys.

A spokesman for the broadcasting group told the British newspaper that the BBC is "never interested in stifling fan creativity in any way."
